STRIVE students and Springfield Rotary volunteers.

Last week, as most students were enjoying a long weekend while teachers finished grading and held parent conferences, a group of Springfield High School students spent three days working to beautify the school.

The students are a part of STRIVE, which is a mentoring program through Springfield Rotary and the first of its kind for Rotary clubs in the area. Rotarians meet twice per month throughout the school year with students who are at risk of not passing classes, not graduating, or dropping out.

The group wanted to make community service part of the STRIVE program and decided to start with Springfield High – by making the entrance welcoming and reflective of the vibrant life within the building.

Springfield High School provided some of the funding for the project through Associated Student Body funds, Interact and the Class of 2012. Students in the school’s metal shop made the new school sign and students in the wood shop made the benches.

Some of the businesses and community partners who helped make this project possible include: Springfield Rotary, Springfield Education Foundation, Ehler’s Construction Company, Schmirer and Satre, Delta Sand and Gravel, Willamette Graystone, Nursery Net and Urban Lumber Company.

Wow! We can’t wait to see what STRIVE and our students accomplish next!
